While it is very important for the individual who wants to work from home to know their skills and limitations, proper planning and selectively working from home on projects that they are both capable of and enjoy doing can have untold benefits. These benefits include being able to take complete control of their own lives and working when and how they please. The same advantages extend far beyond that base concept however.

The financial savings, if properly used to the contractor’s advantage, will be a great benefit and allow the contractor to afford many nice things including vacations that were never available to them before.

Not having an oppressive boss hanging over one’s shoulder all the time is certainly an added advantage. Many people do not work well under pressure, but still feel constantly pressured by a nagging boss. Being free of that pressure not only allows them to work faster, but provide better quality work as well. Knowing their own limitations is important, but many people are actually very surprised when they discover how much better they are capable of doing without somebody constantly looking over their shoulder.

Being able to enjoy time with family, time for vacations or just time to relax and do nothing at all is one of the main advantages. Time is the only commodity that we have that we can never replace. Life is much too short to be burdened with “What if” or “If only” when someone misses a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Money is earned, spent and will be earned again; material possessions can be lost and replaced; but time only comes around once. Once that fleeting moment is gone, it is gone forever.

It is still necessary to be careful with one’s money. Perhaps that is even truer for the independent contractor who does not have the benefit of a steady paycheck. The rewards however, when taken into consideration and compared with the detriments, are great indeed. There is nothing like being able to enjoy time away whenever a person wants to. Travel on lesser-traveled days can increase enjoyment, service and even result in better prices for things that others are only capable of enjoying on time off when prices are usually higher.

For the outdoors enthusiast, sitting in a nice quiet setting with literally no other people around can not only be very pleasant and relaxing, but is often a great place for “brainstorming” and generating ideas and concepts for work. Trying this same feat when the park or woods are full of weekend warriors and screaming children can be an almost impossible task. The ability to control one’s own personal time has many far-reaching advantages.

Here are ten tips that will help you on your quest to make your home-based business a success.

1. Keep tight with your schedule. Working from home is powerful — but taking a nap in the middle of the day is more alluring. Setting a tight schedule for your whole day is critical.

2. Have an office area. Home based-business does not mean you have to work on your dining table or kitchen sink. Dedicate an area solely for office work and nothing else.

3. Be professional. Dress and act as if you are inside the office and just at home when it is time for work. Be up and ready by office hours — being late or drunk is not an excuse even if it is a home-based business.

4. Advertise. People still need to know that your home-based business exists. Even if you have a website, who would know it exists if not for traditional advertising means? Second parallel: Perdita Felicien, a Canadian Olympic hurdler, won the silver medal at the World Track & Field Championships in Japan in August 2007. She said something like, “This moment is not the celebration of just this moment. It is days, months, and years in the making. In fact, being a champion takes between 8-10 years.”

Third parallel: At the last summer Olympics in Atlanta in 2004, Perdita Felicien was favored to win the 100 meters hurdles final. However, shortly after the gun went off, she was tripped up by a woman who fell next to her and therefore, Perdita wasn’t even able to finish the race. Imagine how Perdita must have felt in that moment. Do you think she felt robbed? Cheated? Bitter? Like giving up? Do you think she felt that maybe this wasn’t meant to be? All the hours, days, months and years of training-all lost in one ‘no fault of her own’ moment. Yes, Perdita did lie down on the track for a bit of time, holding her head in her hands, but as soon as the media were able to ask her about the race she said something like, “Today was a tough day, but I’m already focusing on being gold-medal ready for China.” (China is the location for the 2008 summer Olympics.)

So there you have it-what I think it takes to be an Olympian and also, what I think it takes to Fire Your Boss to be an Olympian in your OWN internet business. Today I spent some time on the phone with a wonderful reader of The HBB Confidential.

She shared some challenges that unfortunately are very common in the home business world.

I gave her some quick tips to start turning things around and would like to share them with you too because you may also be experiencing these challenges in one form or another.

As soon as you enter the entrepreneurial world, you must accept that you will be uncomfortable at times. If you are operating from a space of comfort, you are probably not progressing at the rate you would like to be.

Like my reader, you may have chosen home business because you like to be at home — you’re a natural homebody and would rather not venture out into the crazy rat race.

It might be the main reason you decided to start a home business!

You may also have chosen to run your business completely online because you are shy, hate being in crowded places, making small talk or standing out in any way.

You may be a gifted writer or comfortable with intimate one-on-one conversation, but in a group environment feel like a fish out of water.

The most important words of advice I can give you are, ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway. Get out of your house, pick up the phone and let the world know who you are.’

Business is built on relationships and although you may be a whiz with your computer, your telephone and face-to-face communication will reap BIG rewards in the growth of your business.

You may be the queen of SEO or the king of driving web traffic, but hiding behind your computer is not going to give you the results you are capable of creating.

Telephone and in person communications have a HUGE impact on business growth.

Need proof? Look at the top Internet marketers. They meet regularly, attend workshops together, conduct teleclasses so their readers can connect with them directly.

Many JV relationships have only been formed after person-to-person contact has been made. Ten email may not create a connection for you, but one in person contact will.

This week I brought two new entrepreneurs to a local business networking group. One gal was outgoing, comfortable with strangers and by the end of the meeting had collected a handful of business cards.

The second gal, much quieter and quite shy, was a tad nervous when introducing herself to the group, but understands that by committing to the process and practicing every week, she will develop the skill of confident communication.

She understands that her business is unique to our community and will be highly sought after and the only thing that will hold her back from huge success is her fear of putting herself in front of people.

If you prefer email to making a phone call, you are missing out on huge opportunities. Commit to making several calls a week and if the fear is too big, get help.

The only reason you lack confidence in any area is lack of experience. Create the experience and your fear disappears.

Find a coach, mentor or trusted advisor and start doing what makes you uncomfortable.

If you are not recognized as a member of your local business community, get involved in at least two groups pronto. Commit to attending at least two functions a month and build from there.

Relying on the Internet will stunt your business’ growth because nothing will ever replace the power of personal relationships.

Always keep in mind that adsense is the easiest way to make money from your website. You get paid every time one of your visitors clicks on a link. 2. Create a custom palette for each ads.

Choose a color that will go well with the background of your site. If your site has a white background, try to use white as the color of your ad border and background. The idea to patterning the colors is to make the adsense ads look like they are a part of the web pages. This will result in more clicks from people visiting your site.

3. Remove the adsense from the bottom pages of your site and put them at the top. Do not try to hide your adsense. Put them in the place where people can see them quickly. You will be amazed how the difference between adsense locations can make when you look at your earnings.

4. Try to maintain links to relevant websites. If you think some sites are better off than the others, put your ads there and try to maintain them. 5. Try to automate the insertion of your adsense code into the web pages using SSI. Ask your web administrator if your server supports SSI or not.

The next question is how exactly do you do it? Just put your adsense code in a text file, save it, upload it to the root directory of the web server, then using SSI, call the code on other pages. This tip is a major time saver especially for those who are using automatic page generators to generate pages for their website.

These are just some of the tips that have worked well for some who want to generate hundreds and even thousands on their websites. It is important to understand that ads are displayed because it fits the interest of the people viewing them. So focusing on a specific topic should be your primary purpose because the adsense ads will be specifically targeted on a topic that people will already by viewing.
