The idea for a professional development book group emerged from us to ongoing conversations with colleagues about how teachers can gain the understanding necessary not only to foster and support gender variant and transgender students, but also incorporate these experiences into their curriculum in a meaningful way.

We both share a goal of promoting increased understanding among teachers and creating curricular tools for teachers to employ when addressing these issues with their students. We are not offering this model as a replacement for essential policy initiatives that address the real safety and logistical concerns of gender variant and transgender students and their families. Although not exhaustive, significant research and writing is available that addresses LGBTQ issues in middle school and high school as well as university contexts. However, gender variant and transgender issues are often either subsumed by analyses that privilege sexual orientation or are neglected by researchers because of the complex relationship that gender identity and expression has with sexual orientation. For example, someone might characterize a trans-gender youth who is “transitioning” (a social and/or medical process of aligning one’s gender identity and expression with one’s understanding of self) as “coming out” when in actuality they are very different processes. We believe this focus is necessary to foreground issues of gender identity and expression in educational conversations.
